Don't Postpone Life | Daily Quote #386
A great quote from Seneca prompting us to live life properly...
“Why of your own accord postpone your real life to the distant future?”
Seneca, Letters from a Stoic (Letter XVII: On Philosophy and Riches)
‘Too much delayed gratification results in no gratification at all’, a phrase uttered by Chris Williamson on multiple occasions. It is good to plan and prepare for the future - do not be foolish; but, you need to find the balance between living how you want to live and benefitting your future.
If you believe that you have to make a lot of money, and save it so that it compounds, before you allow yourself to indulge in something (potentially a holiday), that is no way to live. You would be betting, not only, on the returns from your investment to validate your decades of waiting, but also that what you want to do now will still be an option in 20 to 30 years time. Or, even more pressing, that you will be alive, or in good health, when that time comes.
Be the sensible optimist, the hope and chances are that you will be here in twenty to thirty years, and what you want to do will still be open to you; but, just as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago: you should live life making the most of each year you are alive, because they are not guaranteed.
Keep in mind Seneca’s question: Why of your own accord postpone your real life to the distant future?
