Don't take offense | Daily Quote No. 132
A quote from the Stoic Epictetus' Enchiridion...
Whenever anyone criticises you or wrongs you, remember that they are only doing or saying what they think is right.
Whenever anyone criticises you or wrongs you, remember that they are only doing or saying what they think is right. They cannot be guided by your views, only their own; so if their views are wrong, they are the ones who suffer insofar as they are misguided. Epictetus, Enchiridion: Chapter 42
Do not take it personally when someone disagrees with you, criticises you, or commits a grievance against you. If your views differ from theirs, this should be taken as an opportunity to understand their view point. Particularly if someone commits a grievance against you, was it truly malicious? Epictetus is quoted in Chapter 45 of the Enchiridion saying: “Until you know their reasons, how do you know that their actions are vicious?” (Do not be surprised if that gets it's own daily quote in the future!)
