Regret is Irrational | Daily Quote #281
A thought I have been developing for a while...
Regret is an irrational desire to change the past.
People often say, I regret my actions, or I regret that this happened; but, regret is a pointless emotion as you cannot change the past. What good does regret do? No amount of regret will alter your behaviour or twist the outcome to the one you ultimately desired. However, if you reflect on that initial inclination of disappointment, you can learn from it, and discard the regret before it forms.
If you learn from how you acted or responded, how can you regret what happened anymore? Without that situation you would not have learnt the valuable lesson. You would not have gone through personal growth. Thus, to hold on to regret would be contradictory.
The only time you should allow yourself to have some assemblance of regret is at the end of your life. At the end of life there is finally no more time for you to learn from your mistakes and alter your behaviour to put right/ensure you don’t repeat the mistakes of your past actions.
Do not allow yourself to get to the end of your life just to look back and experience regret. Learn now.
