In which areas of your life are you compromising the quality of your character in order to attain some external desire? If you are sacrificing a part of yourself now to attain something, why do you believe you will be able to stop the sacrifice upon its attainment? As Seneca said:
“Life will not be just very short, but very miserable, for those who acquire by great toil what they must keep by greater toil.”
Seneca, On The Shortness of Life
This does not only acquire to material goods. If you pay with your personality and your values, you will continue having to do so to keep the thing you attained. The proper path is to be authentic to yourself, to make sure you live in accordance with that higher picture you have for yourself.
